Alan Keith Olivier

Having been employed by Grindrod Limited Group (“Grindrod”) in 1986, prior to its listing on the JSE, Alan has over 30 years of experience in the shipping industry. He was appointed as an executive director of Grindrod in 1999 and remained in this position until 2017. Grindrod has twice been voted the top listed shipping company in the world by Marine Money. Positions held within Grindrod include treasury, financial director, shipping chief executive and group chief executive of the listed entity. Alan has served on a number of boards in both executive and non-executive capacities including being chairman of Grindrod Bank between 2014 and 2017. He joined the board of directors of the UK P&I Club, one of the world’s largest public indemnity shipping insurance mutuals, in 2000 and was appointed chairman in 2013. With the chairman being appointed for a tenure of five years, he retired as chairman of the UK P&I Club board in 2018.

Stuart Ian Bird

Stuart held various auditing and accounting focused positions in his early career and was appointed as the financial director of Hub Trading Company, previously a division of Mr Price Group Limited, in 1993, whereafter he was promoted to managing director in 1999. In 2001, he joined Mr Price Apparel (a division of Mr Price Group Limited) as the deputy managing director and took over as managing director in 2002. He was appointed as deputy chief executive officer of Mr Price Group Limited in 2010 and was promoted to chief executive officer in 2011, in which position he remained until his retirement in 2018.

David Hugh Brown

David is the former chief executive officer of MC Mining Limited having served at MC Mining from 2012 to January 2020. He held various accounting focused positions in his early career and was appointed as financial director of Amdahl South Africa Proprietary Limited in 1996. Thereafter, he joined Impala Platinum Holdings Limited as chief financial officer in 1999 and then served as its chief executive officer from September 2006 to June 2012. David also served as chairman of the audit and risk committee and as a member of the board of directors of Edcon Group Limited between January 2013 and December 2015. He was a member of the advisory board of Accenture SA Proprietary Limited from 2013 to 2018 and is currently a non-executive director of Northam Platinum Limited and the Lead Independent of Vodacom Group Limited.

Thembakazi (Thembi) Iris Chagonda

Thembi’s career has been in Human Capital for the past 24 years. She is a Chartered Human Resources Practitioner, Joint CEO for Global Business Solutions, a Labour Law, B-BBEE Consultancy and Training company. In 2016 she accepted a ministerial appointment as a Commissioner for Employment Equity, a position she continues to fi ll. She is a board member of the Association for Skills Development in South Africa and a finalist for the Oliver Empowerment Awards in 2014 and 2017 in the Top Black Female Leader of the year category.

Desmond (Des) de Beer

Des spent the first part of his career in the banking industry, first with Barclays Bank in South Africa and later with Syfrets which was merged into Nedcor Investment Bank. He was appointed General Manager Corporate Equity and served on the bank’s executive committee. Des has served on the boards of several listed property companies including the board of directors of NEPI Rockcastle from which he retired on 27 May 2020. He is currently a nonexecutive director of Lighthouse where he serves on the remuneration and investment committees and is a nonexecutive director of Hammerson plc, serving on its investment committee.

Nicolaas (Nick) Willem Hanekom

Nick completed his articles with PwC in Johannesburg whereafter he joined PwC London. On his return to South Africa in August 2005, he was employed by Resilient, initially as company secretary and, with effect from May 2011, as financial director of Resilient. Nick was previously the financial director of Fortress. Nick was appointed chief operating officer from 1 March 2020.

Desmond (Des) Kevin Gordon

Des currently consults in a business development role and acts for companies in developed economies with African growth ambitions. He served as group financial manager of Group Five Limited between January 1991 and August 1996. Des spent the greater part of his career at Enviroserv Waste Management, first as chief financial officer for four years and then chief executive officer for 16 years. In 2008, the company was bought out by Absa Private Equity and delisted from the JSE.

Jacobus Johann Kriek

For the past 35 years, Johann has been involved in retail property management, letting, retail acquisitions and development with an emphasis on the development and redevelopment of underperforming shopping centres.

Marion Lesego Dawn Marole

Dawn’s career has predominantly been in the financial services sector. She is the former chairperson of Kumba Resources Limited and presently serves on the boards of numerous listed and unlisted companies within the private sector such as MTN Group Limited, Santam Limited and Development Bank of Southern Africa. In addition, Dawn formed part of the Presidential Review Committee for State Owned Enterprises and is currently the executive chairperson of Executive Magic.

Monica Muller

Monica completed her articles at Deloitte in 2009 whereafter she qualified as a CA(SA). She was appointed as a manager of Deloitte in the audit division in 2010 and was promoted to senior manager in 2012. She joined Resilient as financial manager in October 2013 and was appointed as company secretary in August 2014. She was appointed chief financial officer with effect from 1 March 2020.

Protas is currently the managing director of Khwezela Investment Group Proprietary Limited, non-executive director of Rand Water and National Nuclear Regulator, trustee of Rand Water Medical Scheme and a member of the audit and risk committee of Financial Intelligence Centre. Protas was previously the chief financial officer of Sentech Limited, deputy director general and chief financial officer in the Department of Rural Development and Land Reform, non-executive director of Rand Merchant Bank, WesBank, Capital Property Fund Limited and National Housing Finance Corporation Limited. Protas was also previously a member of the national taxation committee of the SAICA and a member of the South African Reserve Bank Governor’s Economic Roundtable Forum.

Umsha Reddy

Umsha's 26 years of work experience span across the Engineering, Business and IT environments. She has worked in virtual teams across global borders since 1998. She has spent 20 years of her career working for Hewlett-Packard, Microsoft and SABMiller plc. In recent years, she has performed the chief operating officer role for ETC, a subsidiary of the Kapsch Group; as well as the IT Director role for PepsiCo Sub-Saharan Africa. She is currently the Supply Chain IT Director for AMESA-APAC Sectors driving digitisation and transformation in their manufacturing sites and distribution centres across Africa, Middle East, Asia, New Zealand and Australia. In her spare time, she enjoys mentoring and coaching young executives.

Barry Daniel van Wyk
